Journey: Psalms for pilgrim people

On the Bible road

JOURNEY
Psalms for pilgrim people
By Alec Motyer
IVP. 160 pages. £8.99
ISBN 978-1-84474-355-1

How are you finding the journey? Still pressing on? Weary? Settling down? Whatever your answer, this rich and warm devotional book will encourage and equip you on the Christian pilgrimage.

It looks at Psalms 120-136, with a chapter for each (the last two are combined), and three overview chapters. Psalms 120-134, ‘Songs of Ascents’, are ‘possibly the most exquisite single group of Psalms’. They were sung by people on their pilgrim journeys to Jerusalem.

The author sees the 15 songs as grouped in five triads (i.e. groups of three). The first four triads are each a mini pilgrimage. The first psalm in each describes difficulties of the way. The second focuses on God’s sufficiency. The third finds us safely arrived.

The first two triads focus on the circumstances of the way; the second two on the pilgrimage of the heart, with its yearning for God’s blessing. The fifth triad, and Psalms 135 and 136, are all about arrival: revelling in the presence of the Anointed King; enjoying life for evermore; worshipping God and experiencing his blessing.

Four things I especially liked were: the easy, readable style of writing with a clear layout; the wide use of other Bible passages to help us understand these particular Psalms; the application to contemporary Christian living; and, above all, how these Psalms come alive.

It will appeal to Christians of all ages, at all points on the journey. It is suitable to use as part of one’s daily Bible reading, or as general reading. Warmly recommended.
