Journeys of hope: 12 lives changed by God

In debt?

JOURNEYS OF HOPE
12 lives changed by God
Christians Against Poverty. 176 pages. £5.99

The financial crisis the country is going through, along with many nations, has brought to light many deep-seated issues that people are experiencing. The fearful spectre of unemployment and house repossession is causing much fear and apprehension.

For those with such threats hanging over them, worry and anxiety are constant companions. The facts are clear today that the problem of crushing debt is such a burden as to be an immense concern that pressurises countless numbers of people. Yet these issues present tremendous opportunities for the church of the Lord Jesus Christ to show the love of Christ to the burdened and heavy laden.

This book is an encouraging example of how this can happen. We ought to thank God for Christians Against Poverty (CAP). The work began when John Kirkby founded CAP in 1996 in response to the tremendous poverty he saw in his home city of Bradford. As a Christian, he believed God was calling him to use the skills gained through 17 years’ experience in the consumer finance industry to reach out to people suffering under the burden of debt. The book is a selection of testimonies on how people, many outside the influence of any church, came to seek help from CAP to bring their financial problems in order, and then, in turn, to know the Lord. One wished perhaps for a sharper understanding of the work of the Lord Jesus Christ in gospel awareness of those who professed faith, but this, I trust, will develop. What cannot be denied is the great work CAP is doing.

Check out their web site at www.capuk.org and pray for this ministry. Get involved too, for this is a ministry that will become increasingly a necessity in these tumultuous days.
