Eggs, fish and banana leaves

Hardships of a missionary

EGGS, FISH AND BANANA LEAVES
By Ruth Shakeshaft with Lindy Greaves
Authentic Media. 150 pages. £8.99
ISBN 978-1-85078-798-3

In her book, Ruth Shakeshaft paints a vivid picture in words of the joys and hardships of missionary life in Uganda in the 1950s and 60s.

This picture includes a meticulous account of her work in the field of leprosy diagnosis, control and treatment in the most primitive conditions possible. This led to the co-operation, in all aspects of leprosy care, between a variety of missionary and government agencies.

Ruth Shakeshaft was a Franciscan nun who has a real love and concern for others. If this book were to be used in conjunction with her colleagues’ scientific papers on leprosy research, it would be of great use to those currently working in this field.
