The Third Degree

'FREE' missions update

At Forum last September, UCCF’s fifth Gospel Project, FREE, was officially launched. Around 1,000 students, staff, and Relay workers saw the unveiling of 400,000 copies of impressive new FREE gospels, and more than 20 additional resources.

The spring term is now well under way, and Christian students are already putting great effort into getting FREE gospels out. Four months into the FREE gospel project, university campuses are ringing with the sound of Christ being preached and many of the lost are hearing it.

There’s a buzz of activity from mission weeks to intensive evangelism training; from apologetics events to curry nights; from handing-out gospels to learning Mark’s account better.

Exeter

Exeter CU have run gospel distribution weeks throughout January, concentrating initially on first years in halls, and moving on to focus on the campus. John Risbridger spoke at their mission in early February, which was themed ‘FREE’.

Scotland

In one of Scotland’s art colleges, one Christian student left a meeting with a FREE gospel in her pocket. Her friend spotted it and was interested to know what it was. She took it away and read it.

Nottingham

Nottingham Trent City CU’s FREE mission week included an art exhibition consisting of submissions from students on the theme of ‘Freedom’. Gathered in a local pub, the artists were competing for a cash prize, and heard a talk from UCCF’s Interface Arts Co-ordinator, Ally Gordon. The CU has been training on using Mark’s Gospel in evangelism during their small group time.

Their friends on Trent Clifton campus enjoyed following-up 20 students who had expressed interest in the gospel during the November mission week.

Reading

Reading CU held a mission at the start of January and Michael Ots was the speaker. Their venue was a large marquee in the centre of the campus, and events included a quiz, curry evening, and even a bingo night.

Lancaster, Essex, York

Lancaster CU has been hard at work since the beginning of term, running a week of apologetics talks followed by a week of Bible talks; all the time they have been doing questionnaires on campus and distributing FREE gospels.

Essex University held a FREE mission in early February, in which they organised lunchbars, evening events, and gave out around 1,000 copies of the FREE gospel.

York CU spent the first three weeks of term equipping students to read Mark’s Gospel with friends. Their plan, called ‘3 for FREE’, is for each student to hand out three gospels to three friends, and offer to read with them.

Cardiff and Liverpool

Last term, 22 students from UWIC and Cardiff University worked through the FREE4ALL evangelism training course, meeting before breakfast once a week. These CUs have their missions this term and will be well equipped to share the good news with their friends.

City CU (a joint CU of Liverpool’s three universities) has been working towards its mission of reaching every student in Liverpool with the gospel. The students have distributed hundreds of FREE gospels during their GO weeks last term, and are planning their February FREE mission.

London

CUs from across London gathered for an evening of praise and prayer centred around FREE in January, preparing to distribute gospels in the build-up to their mission weeks.

Many missions will be going on as you read this report, and the vast majority of these will be FREE-themed weeks. Please support this work in your prayers — we hope to keep you updated on all that goes on. Pray with us that, as the word of Christ is received and read, the seed will land on good soil and produce living faith in the Lord Jesus.
