CD review

Beating Time

TITLE: SHOUT IT!
WEBSITE: http://www.geraldinelatty.com
STYLE: Latin/soul/reggae/gospel
FORMAT: CD (12 songs)
PRICE: £14.67

Having previously enthused over Geraldine’s contribution to the Worship At The Abbey project, I was excited to hear that she was touring the UK with this, her fifth solo album. It sounded like a good excuse for a family outing. And so to Crewe (which just happens to be Geraldine’s home town) where we found almost 300 more fans.

It was clear from the outset that we were expected to be up on our feet and moving for most of the evening. Some will have difficulty with the concept of corporate worship outside of church. I recall a number of visits to Bach or Handel ‘sacred’ concerts, where my heart really wanted to sing, but decorum dictated that this was just not the done thing (and, in any case, few of the musicians seemed to share my interest in the words).

The songs are full of content and energy, and really do cover a very broad range of styles. The standard of musicianship and production is high. Geraldine has an incredibly unselfconscious, winsome style, and a huge smile that can even be heard on the CD. Her love for Jesus shines very brightly, and her determination to make him known to anyone and everyone is contagious.

Some may raise an eyebrow at quotes in the track notes from Steve Chalke, Rob Bell and The Message, but Geraldine really deserves an unprejudiced hearing. I’ll admit the song ‘God Believes In Us’ caused a kneejerk reaction in me, but I felt rather silly after listening on between the lines. Indeed, Geraldine’s heart is for God’s people to get on with the work he has called and equipped them to do, confident that he who commands us to go has also promised to be with us always.

In a word: tonic.
