Praying through the Scriptures

Prayer from cover to cover

PRAYING THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES
By Esther Wong
CWR. 134 pages. £ 8.99
ISBN 978-1-85345-473-8

Esther Wong, the wife of Canon James Wong of Singapore, has compiled a small book of prayers to use for 31 days. For each day, she has chosen biblical passages under the headings of Adoration, Confession, Repentance, Word for the Day, Thanksgiving and Worship, and Prayers to Encourage. She also includes sections for praying for personal needs and intercession, which give opportunity for personal reflection and making notes.

The aim is to help readers develop a habit of regular daily readings, using the words of Scripture in prayer. The style is clear and straightforward, though sometimes the change from the sublime passages of exaltation and praise under the heading of Adoration, to the Confession of Sin and Repentance, seems a little abrupt.

There is no substitute for reading the Bible chapter by chapter, to understand its meaning and context. However this little book, which is attractively designed, may be helpful as an extra aid in establishing a regular daily time of prayer. More importantly, the Word of God is ‘living and active’ and when we are using the powerful words of Scripture, they become part of our thinking, and part of the transformation that God intends to bring about in our lives.
