In these days of high-tech electronic entertainment, a board game might sound a rather quaint and dull option for a family evening. But I would venture to suggest that such games still have a great deal to offer in terms of pleasure, education and social interaction, benefits which outstrip anything a play-station can offer.
Many board games are materialistic in concept: the winner is the one who makes the most money! Others concern detection of crime or winning by doing other players down. This new board game is loftier in theme, taking John Bunyan’s classic story and inviting the players to follow Christian’s journey, moving in the usual way by the throw of a dice. The attempt has been made before, but this new version is classy and well designed.
The box includes an edition of the story, told and illustrated for children. It is certain that the game will engender greater enjoyment and understanding if the book has been read first. The graphics in the book match those on the board and playing pieces. The roll of the dice takes the place of providence and each character must make his way from the City of Destruction, hoping to lose his burden at the cross and reach the Celestial City with parchment in hand. En route he will meet many of the famous characters from the book and instructive consequences follow some encounters. Atheist, for example, is a very dangerous fellow who will send a player right back to the beginning and reinstate his burden.
Up to six players over the age of five years can participate in this eventful journey. The board, and the game, is busy, with a number of 3D parts of scenery. Easy to play without being in the least dull, it would make an excellent family present.
