The Third Degree

UCCF: a vision for growth

Three years ago, as a response to the ever-increasing growth in student numbers, UCCF took a fresh look at the bigger picture of Christian Union witness in Great Britain.

One thing was clear: in order for every non-Christian student in Great Britain to have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel of Jesus, we were going to need more man (and woman) power Ð a lot more!

Christian Union Staff Workers (CUSWs) closely support students in their area, equipping the CUs to truly live and speak as missionary communities. This takes time, effort and energy. We believe that with more staff, we can help more CUs and better support those we already work alongside.

The vision

In 2006, we stepped out in faith and began working towards the vision of appointing 25 additional CUSWs over five years.

God, in his infinite generosity, is blessing our efforts. In August 2007, besides replacing leaving staff, we appointed CUSWs in three new posts (Staffordshire, Teesside and Newcastle), where there had previously been no staff. We also filled vacancies in Manchester and Exeter where we had been unable to appoint suitable candidates last year.

This year we have been working hard to raise the necessary funds and prayer support to grow the staff team by an additional five CUSWs. We are delighted that from August 2008 there will be new staff supporting students in: South West London; Cumbria; Suffolk and Essex; and Winchester and Portsmouth. In addition, we have appointed a Staff Worker to work solely among Arts students in London and filled a year-long gap in Reading and Guildford.

These are all areas where we identified a ministry need. Having these extra colleagues to work with them will make a huge difference to the local CUs and also to the regional teams.

Work in progress

However, the work doesn’t end here. We are already looking ahead to 2009 and identifying new areas where the ministry need is great. Our hope and prayer is that in August 2009 we will appoint new CUSWs in at least: Cardiff; Coventry; Warwick and Northampton; and hopefully in other areas, as well.

We are committed to making the vision of appointing 25 more staff by 2011 a reality, but in this we are entirely dependent upon God, and all our supporters. Thank you for playing your part in helping us to get this far.

Please continue to stand with us so that we can place more staff on the ground to help CUs reach out to those on their campuses more effectively, so that more non-Christian students can hear and respond to the gospel.
