FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH
By Roger Weil
Grace Publications. 400 pages. £9.95
ISBN 978-0-946462-72-8

Roger Weil is a retired architect who was converted in 1952. He originally wrote Foundations of the Christian Faith for the benefit of believers in China and Russia. Grace Publications have now produced an English version.

The book sets out to be a basic Reformed and baptistic systematic theology. It aims ‘to help individual Christians to gain a clearer understanding of the fundamental teaching of their faith’ and ‘to provide preachers and Bible-class leaders with outlines of the central themes of the Bible in order to help them in their preaching and teaching’.

There are 21 chapters, varying in length. Each chapter takes a theological subject such as regeneration or baptism. The subject is broken down into small sections so that it is very easy to find what you are looking for. Everything is presented in such a way that those who have little knowledge of theology can find help.

In reality, the book is an introduction to systematic theology. It gives only a fraction of the detail that Grudem or Reymond might give; that is not its purpose. But it does provide a helpful way in for those who want to start to increase their understanding of the great themes of the word of God.

I particularly appreciated: the fact that Bible verses are written out in full; the discussion questions at the end of each chapter; the clarity of the writing; the practical nature of what is presented; the systematic divisions in each chapter; and the chapter on the church. I wasn’t quite so keen on: a somewhat superficial engagement with other views; and with a proof-texting tendency.

I could see this book being very useful for new Christians, and for youth groups and house groups who want to start to go deeper into theology.
