Rainbows and promises

Silver linings

RAINBOWS AND PROMISES
By Jean Wild
Day One. 112 pages. £5.00
ISBN 978-1-84625-098-9

Rainbows have always been special to me. Every time I notice one, God says, ‘Don’t be afraid… I’ve promised’.

This aptly titled book is written for a time of life (approaching 60) when some Christians feel a tendency to anxiety, due perhaps to age, lessening abilities or life-changing circumstances.

To inspire faith

Each of 52 readings (each one-and-a-half pages in length) begins with an older familiar hymn from Redemption Hymnal to inspire faith and bring comfort. The author writes in an easy, informal style to bring reminders of and comments on common experiences. The essence of the hymn is linked with Bible references to show how a caring God understands and teaches, consoles and inspires us. A particular Bible reading and prayer seek to draw the meditation together in a personal way. Any book encouraging a realistic acceptance of the temporary nature of life and a more frequent, joyful anticipation of heaven is welcome. However, it offered no particularly fresh or challenging viewpoints and I found it no more than a ‘pleasant collection’. If its style and content suit and edify some older saints who enjoy the hymns and want a good simple basis for meditation, then I trust that they may truly enjoy dipping into its pages.
