It has been two years since I reviewed Lou’s debut album, Treasure. And what a hit that was! I keep meeting new people who enthuse about Lou’s down-to-earth approach to everyday Christian living, her quiet confidence in God’s loving providence, her focus on heaven and on proclaiming Jesus until he returns. So there’s quite a lot for this long-awaited second solo album to live up to!
Lou has had plenty to keep her busy. Last year saw a new baby, various concerts, conferences, Songs of Praise, and Phatfish’s latest hit album, Guaranteed. Some EN readers will have been introduced to Lou at the one-and-only Cheltenham Bible Festival 2007, or at this year’s New Word Alive (where Stuart Townend and Phatfish were leading worship and performing at various ‘after hours’ events).
Where Lou and husband Nathan found the time and energy to deliver yet another high quality project remains a mystery, but such it is. Most of the songs are quite loud and driven, and seem ideal for radio, car and kitchen. Even the quietest songs, ‘In You’ and ‘Christ Crucified’, still manage to hit a crescendo to match their theme ...
Who could understand the depth of your plan, to bring sinners home?
Will we ever know the size of the cost? The shame of the cross?
Self-sufficient ways run through our veins, fighting your grace
But your grace invades, stronger than flesh, demanding a change
So foolish to human wisdom but to your children it’s life and power.
We preach Christ crucified, it’s the only way for souls to be saved who have gone astray.
We preach Christ raised to life and now he reigns, interceding for us till he comes again.
Lou’s crystal clear voice is a big treat throughout, and producer Busbee’s contribution is again outstanding. All the songs deliver a healthy dose of theology and application, and most are singable in a congregational setting (although you will need a band for most of them).
In a word: Brilliant.
