Here’s a testimony that will read true to those involved in local football. It has not been cleaned up for Christian consumption, and it is all the better for it. Haydn Davies, a talented Welsh footballer, was picked for the U21 squad at 16 and played for Betts Boys’ Club, Llangeinor, Lewistown, and Bridgend.
With scouts from Spurs, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Cardiff City and Arsenal showing interest in him, a promising career was lost in a drink-related car crash on ‘A night out with the boys’. One friend was thrown from the car and went for help, two died instantly; Haydn’s spinal cord was nearly severed. Difficulty with walking means Haydn is dependant upon his wheelchair and has serious health issues even today.
This autobiography describes his experience living with lost dreams, disability, work, family life and his route to Christ. If, like me, you cannot watch Casualty because you know someone’s going to get hurt and suffer, you will struggle with this book. But be brave and you will rejoice at the grace of our Saviour.
I thought enough of the book to buy the short DVD from The Nationwide Christian Trust to show it, and give copies of the book to our Fantasy Football League men.
