The ministry of Martyn Lloyd-Jones (MLJ) still exercises a powerful influence for good over the lives of many Christians, and ministers in particular. Tony Sargeant clearly loves his subject, and has taken many years compiling this impressive and helpful anthology of quotes from ‘the Doctor’.

Sargeant’s aims in writing were: firstly, to inspire young preachers to preach the Word of God with the same clarity and passion that MLJ was known for; and secondly, to provide ‘non-preachers… a compendium of theology, albeit in short capsules’.

Lloyd-Jones had a great ability to diagnose the needs of his times, and to systematically tear down false ideas, replacing them with biblical views. The difficulty with quotes is capturing accurately MLJ’s train of thought. Sargeant has done a very good job, although many of the quotes are too long to quote in full in a sermon. But, even in the age of the ‘sound-bite’, many of MLJ’s quotes ring with prophetic relevance.

Those looking for vibrant, thought-provoking quotes, on a wide range of issues, or who have read some of MLJ and want to dig deeper into his thoughts, would benefit from picking up a copy of this book of gems!
