The Third Degree

'Free'

In December’s Third Degree, we introduced to you UCCF’s fifth Gospel Project — a daring initiative to see 400,000 copies of the Gospel of Mark distributed on every university campus where there is a Christian Union (CU).

We asked EN readers to pray for the planning of the project, and to encourage students you know to enter the competition to name the project.

The 2008 Gospel Project has since been named ‘Free’ and since the work is now well under way we wanted to keep you up to date on all the developments because we value your prayer and support. The development of the project so far has been driven by three important factors.

Fundamental convictions

We are convinced that the gospel alone does the work of salvation (2 Timothy 3.15-16), that there is one Redeemer of the world (Acts 4.12), that the gospel is entirely true, and that it will demolish all false pretensions (2 Corinthians 10.5). So it is with great confidence in the power of the gospel that we proclaim it to a student culture so desperately in need.

Culturally appropriate

We are committed to speak not only faithfully but also relevantly to the student world. Since December, we have been working closely with designers to produce a contemporary-looking gospel which will appeal to students and essentially invite them into the text. Capitalising on the title ‘Free’ to tap into the yearnings of our culture to be liberated, we are inviting students to read Mark’s account of how freedom was bought for humanity by Christ.

Student-driven

We are eager to see our students contributing to and owning this project from the start, so that enthusiasm for the distribution of the gospels will be strong among the CUs from the beginning. With this in mind, student input has determined the name of the gospel (inspired by Mark 10.45, where Jesus claims to have come to give his life as a ransom for many), while many have contributed artwork towards the design.

Please partner with us in prayer, and perhaps in giving, as we aim to raise £226,000 to implement this Gospel Project.
