‘There is a Hope’ is a great new hymn from Stuart Townend (with a grand tune to match), and is the title track of his exciting new live worship album recorded in Ireland. Buy it!
And now for something completely different. In spring 2004, Aviad Cohen (the artist formerly known as ‘50 Shekel’) found himself in ‘Jew Rehab’ in New York City doing his best to become an Orthdox Jew. But this celebrated ‘King of Heeb-Hop’ and ‘The World’s Most Kosher MC’ was finding ‘Rabbinical Boot Camp’ rather heavy going. ‘I didn’t feel connected to God at all. I just felt literally strapped to traditions.’
The turning point came in the form of Mel Gibson’s contraversial film, The Passion Of The Christ. ‘All I could hear was The Passion was anti-Semitic, gave a bad name to Jews, it will incite hatred towards Jews and so on. Besides that, every time I asked Rabbis or Orthodox Jews about Jesus, if it was at a Torah study or in da shul, all I got was: Don’t ever mention that name here again! There must be something to this Jesus guy. Obviously he did exist. But who was he?’
Jesus is Jewish!
Eventually, Aviad summoned up enough courage to buy the film on DVD. ‘I popped it into my Apple Powerbook. Started the movie. HOLY SHABBBOS!!!! This movie is Jewish. Jesus is Jewish! His name is YESHUA???? Wait! I thought this movie was supposed to be anti-Semitic. This is the coolest Jewish movie I have ever seen. The Pharisees look familiar…’
You can read the rest of Aviad’s compelling testimony online. You’ll also find some interviews and live performances of his on YouTube. Hooked On The Truth was released in October 2006 and is quite a thrilling listen (even if you’re not into hip-hop). For such a young believer, Aviad has a remarkable grasp of the gospel, and of how the Old Testament is fulfilled in Jesus, the Messiah.
Proclaiming Christ
Aviad’s burden is to proclaim Christ to his Jewish brothers, yet he also speaks fondly of Gentiles. He appears to love the name ‘Jesus’ as much as ‘Yeshua’ (using both interchangeably), and there’s not a hint of condescension. He has already seen a fair amount of persecution, but he defends his ‘True Jew’ credentials forcefully. In interviews he comes across as a really genuine and humble guy. Oh, and his music’s not bad either!
Please pray for Aviad. From Christian Zionists to Messianic Judaisers, there are bound to be many eager to claim this young Christian Jew as their own. Pray that he will continue to proclaim Christ boldly, growing in wisdom and being used to bring many Jews to Jesus.
In a word: kosher.
