This slim paperback is a new addition to Day One’s Exploring the Bible series. It is written by an elder from Lansdowne Baptist Church in Bournemouth who is also a headmaster.
Haggai’s prophecy came out of the situation in Judea after the return from the exile in Babylon and addresses the situation of a leadership team which had lost its way and a people too self-centred and indolent to rebuild God’s temple in Jerusalem. As such, it has a great deal to say concerning priorities in life and where the work of God is put on our life’s agenda.
The author does a fine work of digging out both the historical and scriptural background of the text. He takes us back to the Pentateuch and the agricultural practices of Israel. Perhaps it is the style of these commentaries, but I was disappointed to find that the author seems almost to deliberately shy away from making contemporary applications of the text to today’s readers. Nevertheless it is a helpful book.
