The way everlasting

A study in Psalm 139

THE WAY EVERLASTING
A Study in Psalm 139
By E.J. Young

The late E.J. Young (1907-1966) was widely regarded as the greatest conservative Old Testament scholar of his day. His was learning combined with deep spirituality and a notable humility.

His devout God-centredness is apparent in this recently republished volume (originally appearing in 1965), where he ex-plains Psalm 139 in 24 short chapters, each based on one verse of the Psalm. In so doing, he provides an antidote for an age when, as Professor David Wells has expressed it, God has become in our thinking (even in the church) so marginalised that he 'often weighs lightly on us'.

That said, Professor Young's meticulous scholarship at times takes him into digressions that break up the flow of the narrative. In addition, his general style seems, at least by present day standards, wordy and dated and this may limit the appeal of this book.

The reviewer asserts this with some diffidence, bearing in mind that when Professor Young's book Thy Word is Truth was published in the 1960s, no less able a communicator than Michael Green described it as containing 'by far the most readable and perhaps the most impressive modern defence and restatement of the doctrine of biblical infallibility and inerrancy, by a scholar of world repute'! The Psalm text is the Authorised Version.

This is not, maybe, a book for hurried reading 'at a sitting'. As most of the chapters are quite short, perhaps some would benefit from reading them singly in daily doses, for example as part of their 'quiet times'.
