Sin, salvation and Shadowmancer

A complex life

SIN, SALVATION & SHADOWMANCER
By G.P. Taylor (as told to Bob Smietana)
Zondervan. 248 pages. £12.99
ISBN 978-0-31026-739-3

This is a dramatic autobiography! The cover declares that the author’s life is ‘as complex as one of his novels’ and ‘as unpredictable as the plot of Shadowmancer’.

Well, I hadn’t read any of his novels and so wasn’t very sure what to expect, but found it all the more compelling for being a true story! The book is a record of God’s hand in the author’s life and the message of God’s grace is clear from beginning to end. The author does not try to cover up or excuse his mistakes, faults and follies, or try to convey that he has ever been some sort of hero. He writes with honesty, humour and a touching sincerity.

At first, I struggled with the Americanisms appearing in a Yorkshire story! The simple, or perhaps young, style of the prologue and first chapter led me to think I was reading a book aimed at older children/teens but the developing content soon indicated otherwise as there are quite explicit references to drugs and their use, the occult and also quite intimate references to sexual matters. A degree of criticism of some Christians and churches may make some readers feel a little uncomfortable, or alternatively glad that someone has been brave enough to put in writing what needed to be said!

Anyone who reads the book will find himself in the story somewhere. There will be things you consider outrageous, unorthodox or just daft. But, like me, you’ll finish reading the book. And now I’m off to find Shadowmancer!
