BATTLES CHRISTIANS FACE
By Vaughan Roberts

This book seeks to help Christians in their lives as they face difficulties along the way. The author chooses eight specific areas to address — some of the most difficult and intractable battles that tend to affect us.
Roberts devotes a chapter each to image, lust, guilt, doubt, depression, pride, homosexuality, and keeping spiritually fresh. While, given the length of the book, he is obviously not trying to deal with the topics in an exhaustive way, he does do a credible job of hitting key issues and providing biblically-based counsel. The book is very well written, intelligent and thoughtful without being too technical. The style is readable but never shallow, and its lessons provide both comfort and challenges to us as we live out our Christian lives in the modern world. Roberts does a superb job bringing in relevant Scripture for each topic (which is helpfully written out in the text of the book) and really uses it to make his points powerfully.
Perhaps it is worth briefly commenting on the homosexuality chapter — this is obviously not a majority issue. But having read it, its inclusion makes sense. Christians who deal with homosexual feelings face uniquely painful difficulties, and what our loving response to them as a church should be deserves careful consideration, particularly in our current culture climate.
I wouldn’t hesitate recommending this book to any Christian. Although I read it through fairly quickly in a few sittings I can well imagine referring to it again, spending some more time in whatever chapter happened to be particularly relevant for me at the time. This book genuinely focuses on Christ and what he has done for us.
