The Third Degree

Making disciples of students around the world

Each summer, UCCF CUs (Christian Unions) send students out around the UK and the world on Summer Teams.

This year, 16 Summer Teams are planned the world over along with four International Student Outreach Teams which will take place around the UK, reaching out to international students who come to study English. Each team and country visited is unique, but activities may include leading Bible studies for Christians and non-Christians, English lessons, running sports camps, doing practical work, carrying out surveys, or even running campus missions. A key element is meeting with local student groups and encouraging them in their evangelism. Below is a taster of this year’s trips.

Bournemouth ISO (International Student Outreach) “Bournemouth is brilliant! Last year we were there for two weeks and met students from 40 countries. We had 100 attending meetings each night and five students from three continents became Christians. I get really excited about doing it Ð it’s all the best things about doing work with international students!” CUSW (Christian Union Staff Worker) Kenny Robertson

Former Soviet Union closed country According to the BBC website, this country is a dictatorship, where Christians are persecuted and seen as a cult. The English language camp that the team will run has been interviewed by government officials in previous years. Please pray for the team’s safety and that they would see people come to faith. Praise God for two who were converted on last year’s camp.

Poland CUSW Jim Walford says, “Polish students are now increasingly coming to England to learn English, so the Poland team is working more and more with teenagers on visits. This shift means a slightly different approach, and we would appreciate prayers that this new work will be.

Muslim country in Asia Pray for the all-male members of this trip led by CUSW Arlington Barron, as they work in a potentially hostile environment.

New Zealand CUSW Jonathan Bennett, “The church in New Zealand is very indifferent towards evangelism and the country is even more postmodern than we are in the UK, which makes evangelism doubly difficult. So our team will be standing with the Christians in their gospel work.’

Moldova CUSWs from the North West, Cathy Midmer and Huw Iley, lead this trip to a country where only 0.04% are confessional evangelicals.

Lithuania ‘The summer camp is a great opportunity to stand alongside Christian Lithuanian students and together, share the amazing hope we have in Christ with their friends, many who've never heard the gospel before.’ CUSW Heledd Job
