For a long time now I have not known how best to order my evening quiet time. I am frankly too weary or feeble to tackle anything very demanding and yet I have wanted a Scriptural pillow on which to go to rest. Thus far John Stott’s latest book has provided a perfect answer. I only began in September so I cannot speak for the next eight months, but I have loved the first few months.

As the title indicates we are taken first from Creation to Christ. This amounts to an overview of the Old Testament and the life of Israel. We then journey from Christmas to Pentecost — an overview of the gospels, giving us the life of Christ. Part three takes us from Pentecost to our Lord’s return — an overview of Acts, the Letters and the Book of the Revelation — the life of the Spirit.

For each day there is a page of the distilled wisdom of John Stott, usually on just one verse. It is not that there is anything stunningly new, and those who have read deeply in the works of John Stott or listened to his preaching may well recognise old gems, but there are wonderful reminders as, typically, it is full of Jesus.

Once again we are in the debt of this great Christian teacher, and I shall treasure my copy and I suspect I shall want to use it evening by evening for a second and third year.
