Life through God's word - Psalm 119

Cracking the longest psalm

LIFE THROUGH GOD’S WORD — PSALM 119
By Christopher J.H. Wright

Psalm 119 is well known as the longest chapter in the Bible. Its length and repetitiveness put many Bible readers and teachers off taking a closer look at its wonderful content.

Christopher Wright, therefore, does us all immense good in this excellent book, opening up this great psalm.

He looks at the psalm under five themes, which helpfully give a handle on the distinct message and practical application of this psalm for the lover of God’s word in every age.

The book originated in a series of sermons and the warm practical application comes through clearly. It is, however, much more than a series of sermons. It is, rather, a study guide, suitable for both individual and group study. I used it in my daily devotions over a two-week period finding it hugely helpful in understanding the psalm, and both encouraging and challenging in my own walk with God.

Chris Wright helps us to see that the psalm is a record of a deeply personal experience and intimate relationship with God through the darkness, sin and struggle of life in this world. He also helps us to see the central place of God’s word in our relationship with God, and how through it we can be guided and renewed.

The only small negative comments are that sometimes the layout of the chapters is a bit distracting, and that the number of questions included in the text of each chapter ranges widely — I counted just one question in one chapter and 12 in another! However, this discrepancy is lessened by the inclusion of suggestions for further study, reflection and response at the end of each chapter. This results in a very readable and useful study in a rich and often overlooked chapter in God’s word.
