Michael Haykin’s Jonathan Edwards: The Holy Spirit in Revival is a fine piece of writing indeed.
Sure-footedly surveying the historical data, Haykin constantly brings home the lessons of Edwards and revival in a most helpful and edifying way. Revival suffers these days by its association with the crazies, and Michael Haykin has done a great service to us all by outlining Edwards’s vision for revival, not that it is an almost never-occurring event, but that it is an experience of God central to his means of advancing the kingdom, and which may be fuelled by the Word and prayer.
If you’re looking for a good present, this would be a great buy for the Christian willing to do a bit of thinking, and wanting to dig deep into real experiential Christianity (the Puritans called it ‘experimental’) of a thoroughly biblical and heart-warming kind.
