The life and legend of Hudson Taylor

Teens in China?

WHITE DEVIL
The life and legend of Hudson Taylor
By Tien Dao
Monarch. 156 pages. £5.99
ISBN 1 85424 773 5

Hudson Taylor’s missionary journey was one of many ups and downs, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

White Devil is all of these things combined into one book, which is basically a comic strip. Tien Dao has told the story of the great missionary in a new way for young people in today’s generation.

As a 15-year-old I found it very easy to understand the storyline, which gave a quick overview of Hudson’s life without going into too much detail. The pictures on each page make the story come to life, and keep the read interesting. The accompanying pictures are drawn very professionally in Manga cartoon style, effectively helping the reader to visualise the story.

This type of book is completely new to me, and I found it very helpful in terms of understanding the basic outline of Hudson’s life. The book does not go into a lot of detail but is readable in a couple of days easily. It is probably most effective aimed at the younger generation, as it covers the basics only and is told in comic form.

However, to meet these needs it is a very good book, which I would recommend highly, especially to young people aged between ten and 15.
