The Authentic Christianity series of books from the Banner give us Dr. Lloyd-Jones’s sermons on Acts preached at Westminster Chapel in the mid-1960s. This volume covers Acts 7.30-60.
Expository in nature, these messages are generally evangelistic and, though based on the AV text (which some might find rather anachronistic now), here we find the Doctor at his expansive best. He gives a magnificent defence of biblical supernatural religion. His great gift is to paint the big picture of the state of the world and its need of Christ.
Among the sermons here the reader will find DMLJ’s rasping response to the famous book The God I Want — a sentiment with which evangelists often have to contend. Reasonable people still need a reasonable faith and Dr. Lloyd-Jones, like the apostle Paul before him, reasons with us powerfully out of the Scriptures.
In today’s ‘dumbed down’ world, the Doctor’s sustained thoughtful and serious style is sadly out of favour with many evangelicals. But for thinking people and preachers who would benefit from attending to a masterclass this book is highly recommended.
