Evangelistic zeal

SOUL OBSESSION
By Nicky Cruz
Hodder & Stoughton. 224 pages. £7.99
ISBN 0 340 86333 1

Nicky Cruz has a burning desire to tell people about Jesus. In this book the veteran evangelist sets out to communicate that desire. He succeeds.

Does this mean, then, that his new book would rate as a ‘must-buy’? Well, sadly, no. For despite all the zeal running through this very readable work, Soul Obsession is a book that does not really go anywhere.

In the introductory chapter, Cruz suggests that three factors are necessary to make an impact with the gospel: a passion for Jesus; a heart of mercy towards the lost; and a vision for how and where God is calling us to serve. Nothing wrong with that. The 17 short chapters that follow are then grouped under these three headings. So far, so good.

Unfortunately, as one reads on, the chapters soon have a ‘much of a muchness’ feel to them. We have a lot of testimony from the writer’s own ministry, and this is frequently accompanied by anecdotes — sometimes very moving ones — about some of his Christian friends. What we don’t have much of is biblical content; and in a book that wants to be as much exhortatory as biographical, that is regrettable.

Given the spiritual state of our nation, and the lack of evangelistic zeal among so many evangelicals, it seems almost churlish to strike a critical note about this book. Cruz’s faith, commitment and love for the Lord Jesus undoubtedly shine through; but the discerning reader may find it somewhat less than satisfying.
