Known as the 'Silent Revival' (for it is largely unknown outside the Gypsy community), there is a mighty work of God going on among these people in over 40 countries around the world. 'In the last ten years, 15,000 gypsy people in the UK have become born-again Christians . . . and their lives have been turned upside down.'
Written by a Christian professional journalist, this book is the result of a year spent visiting gypsy sites, as well as their annual convention, and of conversations with UK leaders of the movement. It recounts the beginnings of this work, and the wise steps being taken to consolidate it.
The reality of any Christian claim is seen in what it produces. Here we read of thousands of gypsies who have had 'their lives of corruption, thieving, fighting and hard drinking changed and now live by the Bible'.
The dramatic and widespread changes in the lives of Christian gypsies has come to the attention of town councils and police authorities. News of this spiritual renewal even came to the attention of the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. As a result, one of the gypsy leaders was able to preach to her at 10 Downing Street.
These are largely illiterate people; many learning to read on the Bible. Once more, God seems to be hiding his truth from 'the wise and learned' and revealing it to 'little children'. It is humbling to read of what God is doing among these gypsy people. As we rejoice in it, we must cry out for a similar blessing.
