I was taught at university that ‘We are always just moments away from turning our conversation around to the things of Christ’.

It’s quite possibly true, but how do you possibly turn it to Christ when talking about the supernatural? If you’re like me you have probably resorted to avoidance of the subject, due to ignorance or a lack of confidence. If so, then Spooked is the book for you.

Part of the ‘Damaris Talking About’ series, the book aims at equipping Christians to confidently address the issue of the supernatural. Nick Pollard starts off by clearly explaining the issues and assessing how they affect society today. He is concise yet sufficiently informative to give the reader a good contextual foundation.

After addressing where we, as Christians, might have problems with these issues, the book moves on to its main aim — and thus provides us with a whole array of possible ways to move a conversation on the supernatural round to the things of God (using films like Lady in the Water, or The Sixth Sense). Spooked opened my eyes to just how much of society is caught up with the supernatural — whether it is the TV series Lost, or J.K. Rowling or Garth Nix’s novels. Thankfully, the book reassured me that we don’t need (or have) all the answers regarding the supernatural. However, as Christians we should ‘discuss the possible’ — chapter 6 is very helpful on this.

I’m pleased that Spooked has been written — it’s a helpful book, by no means definitive, but a good read for anyone who wants to be ready to turn a conversation to Christ, even when talking about the difficult topic of the supernatural.
