5 things I wish they'd told me when I'd become a Christian

Another curate’s egg

5 THINGS I WISH THEY’D TOLD ME WHEN I’D BECOME A CHRISTIAN
By Rob Frost
Authentic Media. 182 pages. £7.99
ISBN 1 85078 670 4

This book is bit like the Christian memoirs of Rob Frost! He says he writes it for those being newly discipled, or for older Christians who may have come across certain struggles in their daily Christian ‘plod’ (his term).

The five areas covered are: about belief, discipleship, intimacy with Christ, the church, and suffering. These five broad areas actually cover more like 555 things Rob wished he’d known on conversion!

At times the thrust of the book felt quite negative, but then it is about struggling with certain issues and the challenge of coping with disappointment as a Christian. Yet it was an honest and real account. Each chapter had helpful insights — for example, the first chapter clearly spelt out how people need to know why they have been saved and what from. Something often so sadly lacking, in many people’s experiences.

I felt I agreed with the heartbeat of each chapter, but not necessarily the author’s route of getting there. For example, the chapter about intimacy with Christ. I could say ‘Amen’ to Frost’s description of it — but would not necessarily be comfortable with the writings of Aidan, Gregory or Christian mysticism as a way of getting there. An interesting little book.

Recommended with reservations.
