THE BIBLE PANORAMA
By Gerard Chrispin
Day One. 665 pages. £20.00
ISBN 1 903087 98 8
This is probably the largest book yet published by Day One, who, with its author Gerard Chrispin, are to be congratulated on a remarkable achievement quality bound. It will be valued and often make its journey from shelf to desk.
This book is in two parts. Part one, entitled ‘Enjoying the whole Bible with a chapter-by-chapter guide’, consists of a concise overview of each Bible book with a very helpful and useful, though brief, summary of each chapter. This covers 572 pages.
Part two, ‘Enjoying the unhindered view with confidence — Practical topics about the Bible to help you trust and read it’, is a concise compendium of what the Bible is and why it is to be implicitly trusted as the Word of God. Here is a flavour: ‘The Bible is … a book/library’, ‘The Bible is … God-breathed /man-made’. There is a helpful discussion on the Canon of Scripture — how the 66 books came to be recognised as authentic. Chrispin gives a list of useful commentaries and a compelling demonstration of ‘Christ in all the Scriptures’. Finally there are Bible-reading plans designed to get you through the Bible in a year.
The book is meant for the ordinary Christian wanting to get serious with God’s Word, but those in ministry will find it a useful tool too. Chrispin’s connections with NYLC and United Beach Missions shine through, as does his regard for older Bible commentators. The book is none the worse for this.
Commendations list many people who endorse his book enthusiastically and I add mine! Get it, use it — it will do you good and be one of your best friends. It is worth every penny.
