I was asked to review the first promotional DVD above, which is designed to give a flavour of what Tough Talk do so that you can ask them round for evangelistic events at your church, youth group or mission. However, I found it insufficient for this purpose, and think really you’ll get a better idea of where they are at and what they are like from the Tough Talk — true life stories book and DVD.
Basically, they are former weight-lifters, nutcases and violent men, who are now gentle in Jesus Christ and extol his virtues. With heavy Pentecostal and charismatic leanings mostly, some churches might have difficulties with their lively manner and methods. They tend to give a ‘challenge’ to repent and believe; but they are quite realistic about expectations from such a ‘decision’.
They seem very genuine, delightful people, who it would be wonderful to have round to your church. I am sure they would be amenable to adapting their normal operating procedures for the environment they are in. I get the distinct impression they are meek folk with a desire just to do the most good they can and spread the simple message that their changed lives represent — from near total darkness to light. It is a powerful message, and one of the distinguishing features of our Lord Jesus — that he changes the lives of ‘sinners’.
Even if you wind up thinking your church and events are too small for them to be worth visiting, I would have thought that money spent on their True life stories DVD and book would not be wasted. I showed them to my youth group, and think it is helpful for folks brought up within more conservative and reserved spheres to be aware of and blessed by the undoubted work of God among our Pentecostal and charismatic brethren. As I was!
