The God of All Grace

The God of All Grace
J. Douglas MacMillan, preacher and teacher
Christian Focus. 347 pages.
ISBN 185792240 9

There is something strong and secure about Scottish reformed spirituality. Though in the hands of lesser men it can deteriorate into a grim and introverted gloominess, when translated to us through large hearted, clear minded preachers, it can bring light, assurance and fire to our souls as little else can.
Douglas MacMillan, late professor of church history and principles at the Free Church College, Edinburgh, was the very best of the latter class of men.
This book is an invaluable anthology of some of his work. It begins with an autobiographical sketch of his conversion and call to the ministry, written not long before his passing in 1991. There follows a short treatise on the biblical idea of God's grace, which stresses the themes of power, love and gift.
The majority of the book is then taken up with a collection of Douglas MacMillan's sermons. He was a textual preacher. They vary in length. The messages, taken from all parts of Scripture, come with doctrinal weight, but with a warm and healthy emphasis on both the evangelistic and the experiential. This is real preaching! But though first and foremost a preacher, he was also a great teacher. His style was unpretentious, direct and challenging. The book concludes with a substantial collection of papers covering Scottish church history and matters of church principle from a Presbyterian outlook. Though not many of us are Presbyterian these days south of the border, no-one could fail to benefit from reading this fine volume.
