The structure of this book is quite fascinating. A young man’s father had recently died, with whom he had had a strained relationship that improved in the father’s later years.
In his father’s will there were instructions given to the young man by a series of letters to be opened in sequence, directing him to various different places. Each chapter is a different letter, leading to a different direction and a different location. Thus a ‘life lesson’ is learned, stage by stage, step by step. The challenge is to break free from mediocrity and take risks.
For me, this was a deeply unsatisfying read. The reason, simply put, is that the motivation seems to be purely self-centred, and the will of God and the glory of Christ totally missing. The gospel imperatives that forge a believer’s life and service are absent from this book.
To be sure, it has a ‘Christian’ flavour in some quotes from the Lord Jesus (along with Jane Fonda and John Lennon), but its whole ethos was disappointing.
One of the perks for a book reviewer is that the books he reviews become valued additions to his library. Not this time, I fear. You can afford to give this book a miss.
