Preaching Christ: ‘This makes sense’. My first impressions stayed with me throughout the book. This being: this is vital, makes sense, do I as a preacher do this?
As conservative evangelicals, we all agree we must preach Christ, but to what degree and depth hugely varies. Edgar Andrews’s heartfelt plea is simple: Scripture not only commands we do, but in the Old and New Testaments all its preachers model preaching Christ. Numerous examples are given: Stephen in Acts 7 and Jesus’ own teaching of himself (chapter 7) I found most stimulating.
Andrews stresses the need for simplicity when preaching Christ, but not superficiality. His emphasis is that people need to hear the whole of Christ’s message the whole of the time. For preachers, the application is: point unbelievers to the good news of Christ which is ‘the power of God unto salvation’ (Romans 1.16). But also to do this with Christians telling them ‘the unsearchable riches of Christ’ (Ephesians 3.8). What a privilege and honour.
The book’s content encourages salvation, blessing and joy which will be the outcome of Holy Spirit-filled preaching and teaching that is Christ-centred. Only this will stir and change the hearts of Christians and non-Christians.
A short, clear and very helpful read.
