MR. MOODY AND THE EVANGELICAL TRADITION
Edited by Timothy George
Continuum. 185 pages. £8.99
ISBN 0 8264 7679 1

This book contains a series of excellent articles which examine the life, theology, impact and legacy of D.L. Moody. The information in this book is well researched and balanced. It is stimulating to read both at the level of theology and practical Christian living.

D.L. Moody never attended a seminary and his fellow-worker, Ira Sankey, never formally studied singing. As a team, however, they were wonderfully used of God. What emerges from this book is that Moody was too busy about his Master’s service to be sectarian. He sought to be thoroughly evangelical and consistent with the truth so far as he understood it. Above all, he sought to follow the Saviour, not a system.

The 12 contributors, including Richard Bewes and Warren W. Wiersbe scrutinise Moody’s theology, methodology and attitudes. The book looks at his views on such issues as Dispensationalism, Revivalism, class, race and gender. This book is especially useful to those who may feel critical of Moody, or who may wish to silence once and for all any disquiet about his approach to the gospel.

The book is instructive, I believe, at another level. The contributors seek to provide answers demanded by the modern evangelical. Yet as we hold up the magnifying glass to D.L. Moody it seems to reflect back our own image. The scrutiny to which we subject this man says as much about our spirit as it does about Moody’s views. Such analysis almost unwittingly discloses our preconceptions and prejudices. It reveals also how easy it is for believers to lose sight of simple faith in Christ and a passionate love for souls.

History shows us that D.L. Moody lived for his Master as a burning and shining light. What will be said about us?
