AFTER THE LOCUSTS
By Meg Guillebaud
Monarch. 207 pages. £7.99
ISBN 1 85424 717 4

After the Locusts is a powerful exploration of the importance and role of forgiveness in Rwanda after the genocide of 1994. Extremely readable and yet deeply convicting, this book is a practical analysis of what true forgiveness looks like, using the situation in Rwanda as a case study. As such, the book provides a valuable resource for anyone seeking strong biblical teaching on forgiveness, however much or little they know of the history of Rwanda.

Guillebaud firstly addresses the need to forgive and then looks at what forgiveness is and common misconceptions about what it is not, on both a personal and corporate level.

The book also investigates what true repentance looks like, the relationship between mercy and justice, and how forgiveness is possible in relation to specific issues such as rape. Full of personal testimonies, this is an honest, compelling and life-changing read.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough; it highlights the amazing beauty and power of the cross to transform and redeem the most desperate circumstances. It will equip you to tackle the same underlying issues in your own life — envy, pride, hatred, prejudice — albeit under a different guise. After The Locusts is a poignant reminder that, as Christians, we are called to spread the gospel of Christ’s forgiveness and to a ministry of reconciliation, and this must always start with us and the attitudes of our own hearts.
