Small enough for God

GOD'S LITTLE PEOPLE: THE APOSTLES OF JESUS
By Brian H. Edwards
Day One. 128 pages. £5.00
ISBN 1 903087 94 5

Little People seems a strange description for an apostle like Peter — whose chapter in this encouraging little book is considerably longer than that of James the less — about who Edwards admits ‘...we know little’. But his aim is to show ‘... the whole purpose of our lives, as theirs, is not that we should leave a name for ourselves but that we should exalt the name of Christ’.

This book certainly does that, and in a clear and simple style that will be easily accessible even to quite little people. Thankfully Edwards makes only sparing use of extra-biblical material and traditions in this collection of mini-biographies, but he often has to resort to speculation about how particular apostles might have reacted to some biblical event.

However, his speculations are helpful, because they show the lessons that they and we should have learnt, e.g. Andrew from John the Baptist that ‘a Christian messenger is only successful when his hearers are attracted to Christ’.
