Christmas on campus

Christmas on campus

From November onwards, it’s really difficult to miss the fact that Christmas is on the way. Shopping centres become busier, the Christmas lights go up and there are lots of shiny decorations in shop windows. However, despite all the glitz, glamour and commercialism, Christmas also brings with it a wealth of opportunities for evangelism.

This Christmas saw literally thousands of students attending carol services across the UK — put on and hosted by evangelical CUs. For many non-believers this represented a significant opportunity to hear the gospel explained clearly and faithfully, often for the first time. Here’s just a glimpse of what was happening and where:

St. Helen’s, Lancashire

‘St. Helen’s College of FE and HE held their carol service in the local Anglican church. Over 200 students attended and it was great to see the CU working well with the College Chaplain, who gave the gospel message.’ Martin Povey, FE CUSW North West

Merton College, London

‘At Merton College, the CU is comprised of just three students, but 15 came along to the carol service! Praise God for his provision.’ Steph Bushell, FE CUSW in London

Exeter University

‘Exeter University’s annual football stadium carol service was a great encouragement. Over 3,000 students attended, more than ever before, and Roger Carswell faithfully taught the gospel. It was brilliant that over 100 students took away gospel literature packs — praise God! One postgraduate said, ‘I used to be a Christian but have been a long way away — tonight has challenged me to revisit what it is all about.’ Our God is an awesome God! Incredible, too, that from the vision of one student four years ago a bunch of students are now putting on the biggest carol service held in the South West!’ Emma Brewster, SW Team Leader

Falmouth College of Arts

‘Never have I seen a group of Christians so excited about a carol service. At 6.50 pm there were only three older people and a chaplain, but by 7.05 pm over 200 lively students had crammed into the lovely church. About 150 attendees were non-Christians and many commented on how much they enjoyed the carols and the talk on “Christmas Unwrapped”.’ Paul Webber, CUSW in Exeter

Imperial College, London

‘The Imperial College carol service at Emmanuel Church was brilliant! Ben Carswell proclaimed the gospel clearly and faithfully to around 600 people. Quite a number of guests picked up copies of John’s Gospel and bought copies of the Christianity Explored book. A few came for the follow-up talk and lunch on Sunday December 11, too. Do pray for God to continue to speak to those who came and were challenged to find out more.’ Kah Foon Lye, CUSW in London
