Being a Christian husband

Stand tall for your family

BEING A CHRISTIAN HUSBAND
By Colin Hamer
Evangelical Press. 128 pages. £6.95
ISBN 0 85234 577 1

The Introduction sums up the confusion that prevails in our society about every gender issue, and the associated strains this puts on marriage, family and society.

As with every other part of the book, it is to the point and eminently readable. The author’s declared intention is ‘to explore what role God had in mind for man as a husband’. He probes issues such as the nature of marriage, modern views of masculinity and then, by contrast, the perfect start lined out in Genesis 2.

The Old Testament is then surveyed to see what might be learned about leadership and family life. Then on to Jesus Christ, the perfect Man, as role model, par excellence, for true manliness, and then as true husband to his church, which he loves, for which he takes responsibility, over which he has authority, and to which he is utterly faithful. A glorious role model indeed!

These four characteristics are then explored in more detail. The book concludes with a look at marriage, and answers anticipated questions. The usefulness of this book should be considerable, for men considering marriage, for husbands who want to see more glory to Christ in their marriage, and for their wives. In a confused, and confusing world, a clear biblical path has been traced out for all who seek to glorify the God who created all things (including man, woman and marriage) as a display of his glory. Recommended.

One minor point is the omission of a promised (p.109) bibliography, which would be a welcome resource for further reading. But, this aside, Colin Hamer has done a very useful service to the church.
