Act to end slavery - setting the scene for 2007
Churches Together in England. 16 pages. £1.50
ISBN 1 87429 527 1

The year 2007 will bring the bicentenary of the abolition of the Slave Trade Act, and Churches Together in England have produced a information booklet to ‘set the scene’ for this event.

This 16-page booklet contains interesting information about slavery in the past as well as present-day situations that need to be addressed. As one might guess, it comes from a broad perspective and not all the contents are without controversy (e.g. ‘African religious forms have been reduced to being “strange practices” that should not be taken seriously and yet “God” concepts within them are no more or less arguable than in any other religion’, p.7).

The booklet contains an interesting brief history which highlights Christians at the forefront of the abolition movement, as well as hoping to inspire us today with those same values in order to meet current challenges across the globe.

Could be a good starting point for those who want to learn more.
