The Christian world is indebted to the author for writing a book that deals with mentoring couples whose marriages are in difficulty.
Many couples do not have the support of the extended family examples and advice, which would help them to build a strong marriage. The author points out that there are many well-intended couples getting married who have never seen a good marriage. He argues for ‘support couples, that is, married couples who are willing to share their experience how to deal with difficulties within the marriage’.
Of his own personal difficulties in his marriage, he said that after his parents divorced, much of his childhood was spent growing up alongside extended families. He saw both good and bad examples of what family life should be, which he took into adult life, accepting them without question until he saw someone else doing things differently. There are plenty of practical examples in the book, which ordinary couples can follow and use to help others. He points out that you don’t have to be an expert, but just someone willing to learn so that they can reach out to other couples who may well need the support to get them on the right road to a successful marriage. This book is filled with common sense and practical ideas, which can be used by older couples mentoring newly-weds, or couples who have been married much longer, but still in need of help with their married relationship.
This book is based on Christian teaching. In his letter to Titus, Paul tells the older men that they were to be models for the younger men; and likewise the older women to the younger women (Titus 2.1-8). I believe this book will be a great help to many couples struggling to keep their marriages together. This can be done through ‘support couples’, that is, married couples who are prepared to take the time and trouble sharing their experience with younger couples who are looking for help in having a good marriage.
