Praying God's word

With reservations

PRAYING GOD’S WORD
By Beth Moore
CWR. 344 pages. £7.99
ISBN I 85345 360 9

I was delighted to be asked to read this book; the title suggested that it was exactly the sort of book I needed to read and the sub-title, ‘Breaking free from spiritual strongholds’, aroused my curiosity.

By the end of the book I was wishing I could meet the author as a friend! Her zeal for God and his word, her desire to overcome the old nature and its habits and her warmth of heart came over as very attractive. And the chapter titles were promising: who would not want to overcome idolatry, pride, deception, an unforgiving spirit, etc.? I certainly felt she was dealing with real issues.

However, there were disappointments! As with other books that I have read from across the Atlantic, this struck me as a ‘How to…’ book.

There is a set pattern of behaviour, which, if followed, will answer all our problems. In this case, we are not only told to turn to the Bible to instruct our praying — which is excellent advice — but we are given many pages of prayers, mostly Bible-based, that we are to use in order to overcome. As I have said, it is excellent to turn readers to the Bible, but even then we have no magic formula for spiritual warfare.

The strongholds that Beth Moore mentions are the old besetting sins that we all know about and battle with. But even then I was a little disappointed when I turned to deception and found it was about the devil telling us lies that we are helpless to prevail against, rather than what I thought it would be about — the dishonesty of my own heart.

But, with these reservations, there is much here to encourage and instruct.
