Surprising (CD)

Beating Time

SURPRISING (CD)
By Geraldine Latty
Kingsway Music. £14.99

This is the third solo offering from popular worship leader Geraldine Latty. It shows a welcome return to proper songs — I’m afraid her second album sounded big and bombastic but didn’t seem to do much actual business on the song front.

The new album starts well with the title track, an understated mid-tempo piece expressing amazement at the way God chose to show his love to those who don’t deserve it. ‘Worship God’ comes over all 70s disco classic — Geraldine’s exuberant singing shining through. A note of caution is sounded as ‘Perfect love’ flirts dangerously with Celine Dion-style MOR balladry — sorry, the strings are just a bit too dramatic. Still, normal service is quickly resumed with the exquisite ballad ‘Simply yours’.

‘First’ is the stand-out track — a magnificent piece of pop/soul with a catchy hook that will simply refuse to leave your brain for days. Things are kept interesting musically with the reggae-ish beat of ‘Dance of our God’, although the lyrics are really just a sophisticated rewrite of ‘Lord of the Dance’. There are plenty of other good things here and the album ends on a high note with the gorgeous ballad ‘The Lord is King’.

In his review of the latest Kate Simmonds album, PGDH suggested that her voice wasn’t always entirely convincing in carrying the big gospel numbers. Well, I think Geraldine Latty does have that voice and I’d really love to hear her in a more overtly soulful/gospel setting, rather than the more ‘produced’ sounds of this and her last album, both recorded in America. Having said all that, this really is a very satisfying album, not at the cutting edge, but full of good songs.
