SPIRITUALITY ACCORDING TO JESUS
By Rebecca Manley Pippert
IVP. 80 pages. £3.99
ISBN 1 84474 058 7
As the author of this study guide is also the author of that classic on sharing your faith, Out of the Saltshaker, you’d expect it to be a helpful guide — you won’t be disappointed.
It’s a guide of eight studies based on Luke’s Gospel. The stated aim is to discover what Jesus said about spirituality and how that may impact our lives. It seeks to prompt questions and get the reader started on a journey toward faith.
My neighbour kindly agreed to trial some of the studies with me. As someone who had never studied the Bible before, she had some initial comments to make. She’d have found it helpful to have a brief introduction on how the Bible is made up and an explanation of what all those numbers all over the page are about!
Each study starts with a ‘Discussion starter’ to help people feel at ease and relax as they’re able to offer an opinion with no prior knowledge needed. Then there are some helpful notes on the historical context. The study questions are useful in encouraging engagement with the text. Each study ends with a small section entitled ‘Live what you learn’ to help personal application. The studies encourage both digging into the gospel and good discussion.
It’s a good way to begin studying the Bible and could well lead on to something like a ‘Christianity Explored/Explained’ group, especially as Luke is used here as opposed to Mark in those courses. The study guide is attractive and well presented and would work well one-to-one and in a small group.
