WHEN YOUR HUSBAND DOESN’T BELIEVE
By Jeri Odell

Many women in our churches face the particular challenge of walking with Christ alongside an unbelieving husband. Jeri Odell seeks to encourage women in this situation, drawing on her own experiences and those of her friends.
The subjects she covers include growing as a Christian, being a godly example to your children, avoiding temptation, and handling the aching loneliness, and there is a particularly good chapter on praying for your husband. She raises a number of interesting issues such as the importance of a healthy thought life, the problems of self-righteousness, and the jealousy felt when someone else’s husband is converted.
Like many CWR books, it is immensely readable and practical and Jeri Odell clearly loves the Lord. She has a great ability to empathise without being a soft touch! The big question, however, is the use and place of Scripture in the book. There are Bible verses in each chapter but it is the real life examples she quotes that set the agenda, rather than the Bible itself. The wisdom she shares stems primarily from her own experience and that of her friends — Bible verses are quoted as supporting material. The headings from chapter 3 illustrate this: ‘Lessons from Julie’, ‘Lessons from others’, and ‘Lessons from Scripture’. There is much that is useful but, in my view, the Bible material needs to be more carefully handled and given higher priority.
