'To be a rad lad means to surrender your whole life to the will of God, to allow him to be in control, despite your own emotions, what your mates are doing and the way it has always been done.'
So begins Rad Lad Livin', a book written in a lively, accessible style which is also immensely practical. It has bullet points at the end of each chapter with questions to consider. It also brilliantly suggests discussion points that every lad should talk over with a 'big bruva'.
It's vital that subjects such as masturbation (labelled a sin by the author), porn, bullying, banter and homosexual practice are tackled by an author keen to see God glorified in a lad's inmost thoughts. He does so with passion and compassion, illustrating the stories with telling examples from his own life.
At times it can be hard to differentiate between this youth leader's experience and the thrust of the Bible's teaching on obedience to Christ. Some of the sections can stray dangerously towards the trite on some difficult issues. However, as a way of showing a lad these issues of obedience are ones that God's Holy Spirit is interested in and able to help tackle, it's extremely helpful. There are lots of Bible quotes and illustrations and practical tips to help.
Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is that it's a book by a bloke who has wrestled with what it means to be a radical disciple of Jesus in the 21st century and wants to pass that on. This is an important book that the lads you know would do well to read - you could buy it for them and maybe even work through it together.
