LIFE'S BIG QUESTIONS
By Vaughan Roberts
IVP. 175 pages. £5.99
ISBN 1 84474 021 8

This book was good in stimulating discussion based both on the subjects explored and from the bible studies. Having heard Roberts' fast-moving presentation on a similar theme, I have to confess to some disappointment that his lively style doesn't come across as well on paper as it does in person.

My recurring question while considering this book has been, 'Who is it for?' The lightweight appearance of the book belies the content somewhat. However, I believe it is a book worth persevering with.

Roberts uses the framework from his book 'God's Big Picture' in each chapter. This is helpful as it enables us to see the progression of the kingdom from its pattern in creation, through Old and New Testament history, to the perfected kingdom that is to come. He applies this framework to various themes, including 'Who rules the world?', 'Money', 'The Holy Spirit'.

Towards the end of each chapter, there's a section on practical application. This helps avoid knowledge for its own sake and causes the reader to consider the personal implications of each subject.

Each chapter then concludes with a Bible study. This is perhaps what helped me to answer my initial question. The Bible studies are helpful but do require some wider biblical knowledge. So, perhaps it's not for a young Christian on his or her own. A mentoring situation where a more mature Christian meets to discuss the previously read chapter and then takes the younger believer through the Bible study is probably the way this book could be used most effectively.
