Amrach and the Paraclete is a fantasy novel in the style of many that are currently flooding the market for the pre-teens. It is an allegory showing the relationship between God and his people, and is an exciting read which owes a great deal to C.S. Lewis's Narnia stories, e.g. the Lion = Jesus = Aslan.
Biblical truth which gives a clear understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit, and God's constant enabling in our journey through life, is woven together with the really great ingredients of fantasy writing. It can be clearly seen as an antidote to the amoral and pagan ideas often found in this modern book genre.
It was interesting to discover the appendix which gives Scripture references for each chapter, showing the biblical truths which the story contains. Whether the 10-12 year-olds will use this for themselves is debatable, but it would be most useful if the story were to be serialised at a youth group/holiday Bible club, etc.
The greatest recommendation I could give this book is that I would have bought it for my son, and be prepared to have it in my classroom book corner!
