It's that time again: A level results are out and preparations for university have begun. For some that may mean searching through the Clearing places, and for others heading off to IKEA to buy kit for their room and imagining life in their chosen destination.
Thousands of parents and students-to-be are about to embark on a new life, the thought of which can generate a heady mix of excitement and apprehension. For Christians, there is the added spiritual dimension: 'Will my son survive as a Christian at uni?' 'Will the girl in my youth group find any Christian friends?' 'What will people on my corridor say when I tell them I'm a Christian?'.
I certainly remember arriving at my halls of residence on day one of university and the sheer delight on my parents' faces as members of the Christian Union came over to the car to help us unload. This wasn't only because of the volume of stuff I'd brought with me, but also because the first students their daughter had met were Christians!
Link Up
The UCCF Student Link Up service is designed so that Christian Unions know about students who are coming to their uni/college before they arrive, and welcome them right at the start of the academic year.
For the last few years Wayne Dixon, a Scripture Union Schools Worker, has ordered copies of UCCF's pack for new students and passed them on to Sixth Formers before they leave for university. One student, sent this reply: 'Thanks very much for thoughtfully sending me [UCCF's new student information] and Student Link Up form. I thought it was brilliant! It covered all the issues that were concerning me, both spiritual and practical. I sent off the Student Link Up form, and [looked at] the info on the UCCF website, so I know where [the CU] meets. I have passed this info on to other Christian friends going to uni because I think they will find it helpful too.'
Online
The Student Link Up service is now online. New students can sign-up themselves, or someone else can do it on their behalf (which may be useful if the student might not necessarily go to the CU, or is not a Christian). You can fill in the form at www.uccf.org.uk where you can also order copies of 'Fresh' - a rough guide to student life. This pack, presented in a series of pull-out cards, looks practically and biblically at the issues students face and costs just £1.
Above all, please do pray for those who are starting out as students this autumn, asking that they will honour God in their lifestyle, faithfully stand for him, and get involved in the CU - helping them to mature in their faith, and share the good news of Jesus with others.
