Why have some great men of God made such a mess of their marriages?

That is the question Doreen Moore asks as she studies in some detail the available material on the marriages of George Whitefield, John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards. Of these three only Edwards seems to have had what could be described as an exemplary marriage.

It is difficult to draw precept from biography, especially when the data is in some cases somewhat deficient and we are left guessing and speculating. However, the author extrapolates some wise principles which have a helpful application to anyone engaged in or contemplating a combination of marriage and Christian ministry.
